Page | Chief Public Affairs and Impact Officer, REI Co-op
Current role: I work to scale REI Co-op's mission and purpose through internal and external communications, employee events and recognition, sustainability, community partnerships, philanthropic giving, public policy, government affairs, and broader advocacy initiatives.
Previous roles: I have spent my 30 year career drawn to business transformation and large change initiatives. The first 20 years were focused on mastering the communications discipline. I realized that I would prefer to be in the driver’s seat when it comes to leading change and decided to pursue an MBA so I could pivot into strategy and operations. Before joining REI Co-op, I acted as SVP of Impact & Communications at Clif Bar & Company, and VP of Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability at Campbell Soup Company.
A little bit about me: I’m process oriented and a systems thinker. That natural inclination led me to working in large, global shared services organizations where communications and change became an important skillset, but not my day job. It was through that work that I found my way into procurement strategy, responsible sourcing, and eventually corporate responsibility, sustainability and impact. Today, my role and work encompasses my full portfolio of skills and experience, where business acumen paired with strategic communications are critical success factors.
Fun fact: I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 30 years. I love traveling and have been named by GreenBiz as one of ‘25 Badass Women Shaping Climate Action.’
Let's talk: The ever-evolving role of corporate affairs and communications, and leading with purpose, mission and values
Page | Professor of Sustainable Communication, Center of Expertise, Energy, Entrance, Hanze University of Applied Sciences
Current role: At Entrance we do applied research in accelerating the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and into the establishment of the Sustainable Society. My main role is relationship management and applying for funding for projects and leading a research group of about 10 colleagues as well as serving as client for many student projects on bachelor and master level. I am a board member of the European PR Education and Research Association (Euprera) and Dutch association of Professors of Applied Sciences (Vereniging van Lectoren).
Previous roles: After finishing my PhD, I joined the University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam School of Communications Research in 2000. In 2006 I became editor in chief of Corporate Communications, an International Journal (till 2015), including co-organizing the annual CCI conference at the U. of Baruch in New York City. In 2011 we organized the first edition of the CSR Communication Conference in Amsterdam, a biannual conference, that had its 7th edition last year at the University of Bath (UK). I published more than 500 articles, chapters, blogs, editorials etcetera on many aspects of Communication, including organizational change, (employer) branding, CSR Communication, social media and sustainability.
A little bit about me: In the Netherlands we need to choose at a young age for levels of education. Being a farmer’s son, my future should be at the farm, my parents thought. But I run to all levels of education and ended with a PhD and being employed as a professor. The best experiences have come from my students. Initially, students may not find energy-related projects engaging, but by the end of the project they often express newfound appreciation for the subject and their fresh perspectives and creativity often lead to innovative outcomes. Especially in an international environment at Hanze, with 18 different nationalities for instance in our Master of International Communication, this is a very rich environment that gives me lessons every single day again.
Fun fact: I remarried 12 years ago and am now (bonus) father of 7 kids (2 of them are biological mine) along with being bonus grandfather of 6. The first time one of them called me granddaddy, I was shocked. At that time my own kids were 16 and 14. Also, my favorite all time musician is Bruce Springsteen.
Let's talk: How to engage the public or employees in organizations. Being transparent, open and honest is the general advice any organization can profit from. Don’t be afraid of the future, but make sure the future is sustainable, for you, and your organization.
Page Up | Head of External Communications, London Stock Exchange Group
Current role: I’m currently Head of External Communications for LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) a leading global financial markets infrastructure and data provider. I lead a team of 15 based from London to Dubai to New York, Singapore, Tokyo and Costa Rica responsible for delivery of the Group’s global communications strategy. It’s been an exciting time to be with LSEG over the past 10+ years seeing the Group grow from a market cap of £1 billion in 2009 to over £60 billion today, with more than 25,000 employees worldwide – no two days are the same and that’s what keeps things interesting!
Previous roles: Before LSEG, I worked as a director at the international PR agency Citigate Dewe Rogerson, giving strategic PR advice and consultancy to companies around the globe - a great foundation for my career in communications.
A little bit about me: I love living in London with all of its culture, world class theatre, museums and galleries on my doorstep (although I probably don’t take advantage of them as much as I should). I’m an old school lover of the paper to-do list and take more satisfaction than I should in scratching items off – even if the list grows just as fast as I can complete them!
Fun fact: I am probably one of the only people to still buy (and listen to) CDs.
Favorite place: I love to travel and aim to visit at least two new countries or places each year. Having grown up by the sea, I always find being by the coast, wherever that may be, a very calming and happy time.
